The Tattooist

The gates burst open. Several years have passed since Máro our tattooed protagonist last drew a breath of fresh air. Out of jail, he will have to adjust to the new social arrangement, as well as cope with his own affairs. As it turns out, the prison did not merely relieve Máro of his freedom. He also lost his hard earned possessions, and the trust of his friends and family. And those are not easy to win back.

The re-opened tattoo studio in an old apartment home where Máro, the tattoo master, finds refuge, and which comes to mean the world to him is also a microcosm that reflects the “symptoms” of the current era. As if things were not hard enough, Máro is confronted by his son Rafo. The two start a turbulent father-son relationship that endures many trials and eventually grows into a solid bond. The men learn, for the first time in their lives, what it means to feel ´at home´.

Máro´s work – his customers´ skin – essentially chronicles the steady advance of history, from "dead beat Communism", to “hyper-capitalism”, the trends that have caught on and taken off over the preceding decades. For years, tattoos were illegal, and now they are enjoying great popularity and have become a global phenomenon. Rafo and his peers admire the legacy of their progenitors that has been passed down from generation to generation over thousands of years.
