Meinolf Zurhorst

After studying History of Art, Film and Television and Anthropology, Zurhost was a prominent film critic and author of almost 20 books about cinema and actors. In the eighties, he co-founded a production company which produced special interest programs for German TV, in particular for

Voice of Germany. 


He co-wrote and directed several documentaries, including films about two German stars, Götz George and Mario Adorf. In 1992 he became the commissioning editor at the ARTE cinema department in Strasbourg, and served as its director from1994. As of 2000, Zurhost serves as head of the ARTE film department of ZDF. ZDF/ARTE’s recent co-productions include A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence by Roy Andersson, Zurich by Sacha Pollak, Cemetery of Splendor by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and Eisenstein in Guanajuato by Peter Greenway. Upcoming films include La memoria del agua by Matias Bizé, Clair Obscur by Yesim Ustaoglu and Grain by Semih Kaplanoglu. Zurhost serves as an expert for EAVE and ACE and as a lecturer at Film Factory in Sarajevo.
