Mikel Gurrea is a writer-director born in Donostia - San Sebastian in 1985. He graduated with honors in Audiovisual Communications in Barcelona.

While working as a director's assistant at the production company AGOSTO, he directed his first shorts (PRIMO, THE CATS ON THE ROOF, RED IN THE WATER).


He was awarded with a la Caixa scholarship to study a MA Filmmaking at the London Film School. In that time, he directed the documentary TXORIA, the PRIX Europa award nominee CHESSMATES and he wrote the dramaturgy for Rambert Dance Company's AUTOMATIC FLESH, which premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.


His graduation film, FOXES, was awarded at the Montreal World Film Festival among others. Foxes was chosen for the KIMUAK – Basque Short Film catalogue. In 2016, his play SOKA (ROPE) was commissioned by the European Capital of Culture and it premiered in San Sebastian's Victoria Eugenia Theatre.


His feature film project HELDU (HOLD) is being produced by Xabier Berzosa (FLOWERS, HANDIA) and Eva Sigurdardottir (RAMS) and it was devolved at EAVE and Source2.


His feature film project SURO (CORK) was selected by IKUSMIRA BERRIAK – The San Sebastian Int. Film Festival Residency 2016. This project was awarded with the post-production grant at The San Sebastian Int. Film Festival, it was selected for the L'Alternativa – Barcelona Film Festival's Professionals Area and Sources 2.

Cork will be Mikel's first feature film.
