The Update The Update Mor Hanay Producer Kobi Mizrahi Lab Edition 11 , 2023 SCENE PITCH Production KM Productions Country Israel SYNOPSIS In a world where humans can order their ideal cyborg partner, Adam is in a relationship with Alex, who was "created" especially for him. During the annual "update", Adam and Alex will be separated for 48 hours and for the first time in his life Adam will forge a connection with a real woman of flesh and blood who isn't perfect at all, and go on a journey with her during which he will learn to appreciate the beauty in the imperfect. DIRECTOR'S NOTE Imagine you could choose between a custom partner created especially for you, and a human partner with his own needs and desires, what would be your choice? The Update depicts a reality that fulfills our every fantasy, to have a relationship tailored precisely to us. - Girls Will Be Girls
Girls Will Be Girls Girls Will Be Girls Shuchi Talati Producers Sanjay Gulati, Richa Chadda Lab Edition 9 , 2021 SCENE PITCH Production Country India SYNOPSIS Follows the journey of 16 year old Mira, whose sexy, rebellious coming of age is disrupted by her young mother who never got to come of age herself. DIRECTOR'S NOTE Director’s Note GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS is set in a conservative Hindu school much like my school where we started each day with a pledge to “preserve our ageless Indian culture and conform to the way of life prescribed by it.” As I sprouted breasts, I understood that ‘Indian culture’ was the reason my skirt had to be long and my behavior demure. We were being taught to be ashamed of our bodies and sexuality while male sexuality was allowed to express itself, often in aggression towards us. Meanwhile, real female bodies and female desire were also erased from our screens. Breasts and butts were hypersexualized as women gyrated for the male gaze. But vaginas, menstruation, pubic hair, etc. were absent or treated with embarrassment and revulsion. The effect of this erasure is to cast our bodies as something shameful. It teaches us to be compliant and afraid of our body, sexuality and voice. Despite this, all around me I saw fierce, funny women who subverted social and moral codes. In GIRLS I wanted to write about these women who populated my life but not my screens. In GIRLS, Mira and her mother Anila are sexual, embodied beings with secretions and desires. Mira examines her vagina in a mirror, masturbates by rubbing up against a teddy bear and orchestrates her first sexual encounter. Anila shuns the self-sacrificing, asexual roles mothers are relegated to. She envies her daughter’s figure and boyfriend and pursues her desires with fervor. But even though GIRLS is a close observation of gender roles, sexuality, and patriarchy, it makes no thesis statement. The women in this film are not essentialized by their identities as Indian women, nor are they stand-ins for entire communities whose stories enlighten us about a social issue. I want Mira and Anila to represent only their singular selves as they experience love, disillusionment and envy. Because this is how their stories will also be universal—a luxury mostly reserved for characters from dominant cultures. The Handball Coach The Handball Coach Sivan Noam Shimon Producer Benny Fredman Lab Edition 12 , 2024 SCENE PITCH Production Red Films LTD Country Israel SYNOPSIS The moment when Yael "the Bulldozer" Cherni (32) scored the winning goal in the European Handball Championship defined the peak of her career. But it also crushed her knee and left her with excruciating pain and the nickname. The doctors say her career is over, her partner Nofar (30) pleads her to move on, but Yael feels belittled. The only one who believes in her is Sari (17), a troubled goalkeeper in the youth team Yael coaches. Around her, Yael feels strong, worthy, and admired once again. The relationship between the two takes an unexpected dimension. DIRECTOR'S NOTE I was an athlete and the feeling of "I'm a badass" became a key part of my being. Thus, I set out to write a story of a woman who doesn't know who she is without her strength and will do anything to stay on the court. I chose handball, not such a popular sport, and the peripheral town Or-Yehuda, to express the perception that women’s sports are marginal. Hence, many female athletes don't get the appreciation or financial support like their male counterparts. For people who come from marginalized populations, sports can be life changing, if not as a career, then in a "I'm a badass" state of mind. - Curtain Call
Curtain Call Curtain Call Elinor Nechemya, Sivan Gal Boico Producers Aurit Zamir, Yoav Roeh Lab Edition 12 , 2024 SCENE PITCH Production Gum Films LTD Country Israel SYNOPSIS Dekel, a fringe director in her mid-thirties, gets a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity- to direct a new cabaret at a renowned repertory theater. Everything runs smoothly until her estranged father is released from jail earlier than expected, and messages her that he is coming to the premiere. Horrified by his unwelcomed reappearance in her life, Dekel confronts him, hoping to finally put this painful chapter of her life behind. But instead, a shameful, unspoken longing for her abusive father resurfaces, forcing her to confront the true nature of her trauma, and the ways in which it shaped her. DIRECTOR'S NOTE The film’s cinematic language is violent and direct, whilst the images created offer a pathway to raw emotions and a deep-seeded sense of longing. The theatrical world serves as an alternative fantasy, a crack through which memories leak into reality. The shifts between the rehearsals’ protected, intimate space, and the grandiose cabaret scenes create tension, disrupting the film’s tone and tempo, mirroring Dekel’s soul. Dekel’s freefall story is also the story of a space changing from a space of enablement, to a space of drowning. And just like the space itself, Dekel’s point of view changes before our eyes, shifting on the elusive continuum between a woman and a child. A continuum which, once accepted, carries the possibility of salvation. ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS ○ Elinor Nechemya | Director Elinor Nechemya is a Tel-Aviv based director and screenwriter.
