  • AFTER DARK

AFTER DARK AFTER DARK Erenik Beqiri Producers Olivier Berlemont (Origine Films), Pierre Mourey (On Film Production) Lab Edition 10 , 2022 SCENE PITCH Production Country France / Albania SYNOPSIS After Dark is both singular and universal. Singular because of its territorial anchoring and the city of Tirana being a whole character, Albania being rarely shown in mainstream movies. But mostly because of its artistic proposal and the way it uses and twists the fantastic element, in an intimate and naturalistic way. It is also universal because of its topic of a love story, although it involves here a vampire woman. DIRECTOR'S NOTE In After Dark, there won’t be any fangs, crucifixes... The vampires are not immortal, they are a cursed extension of our society that cannot find where they fit in. I want to describe them as flawed sensitive beings, with desires and needs just like us, evolving in a chaotic city which is also struggling to find its identity. The story also asks : can we really feel the same towards each other when we are so different ? ABOUT THE FILMMAKER PRODUCERS Olivier Berlemont (Origine Films), Pierre Mourey (On Film Production) Origine Films has produced and co-produced 50 fiction shorts films to this day. • The Vacation

The Vacation The Vacation Dénes Nagy Producers Sára László, Olivier Dubois, Marcell Gerő, Jean-Laurent Csinidis Lab Edition 12 , 2024 SCENE PITCH Production Campfilm, Hungary; Films De Force Majeure, France; Novak Prod, Belgium Country Hungary, France, Belgium SYNOPSIS A Hungarian farm worker in his 40s goes on an organized trip to Provence with his wife. It's the first time they've been abroad, and they speak no language other than their own. During the trip, they make friends with another Hungarian couple, who seem to be more experienced travelers than they are. While his wife is excited by this new acquaintance, he feels more and more lost. He observes his wife slowly drifting away from him, which triggers an inner voyage of self-discovery. DIRECTOR'S NOTE The basic premise of the film is that it will be working with an amateur cast: to build on the presence of these characters, to record their inner uncertainties. Another important element is the comedy which stems from the protagonists’ ignorance. Our hearts open to these people: they are lost characters who try to stand their ground, but in the meantime, attempt to cover up their clumsiness. What can we do with realities that are alien to us? What do we do with the foreignness of ourselves? ABOUT THE FILMMAKER Award-winning scriptwriter-director Dénes Nagy graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts of Budapest in 2009. His debut feature "Natural Light" had its world premiere at the 2021 Berlinale where it won the Silver Bear Award for Best Director as well as the European Film Awards Best Production Design Award. He has made several short films, both documentary and fiction, which were screened and awarded at many significant national and international festivals. PRODUCERS Sára László, Olivier Dubois, Marcell Gerő, Jean-Laurent Csinidis Sára László and Marcell Gerő founded the Budapest based production company, Campfilm in 2007. The company’s credits include "Soft Rain" by Dénes Nagy (45th Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes), "Cain’s Children" by Marcell Gerő (62nd San Sebastian IFF), "The Euphoria of Being" by Réka Szabó (Grand Prix of the 30th Semaine de la Critique of the Locarno International Film festival) and "Natural Light" by Dénes Nagy (72nd Berlinale Competition Silver Bear Award for Best Director, EFA Best Production Design Award). In 2010, Jean Laurent Csinidis co-created Films de Force Majeure, a production company focusing on auteur films and international collaborations. He has produced or co-produced 30 films, most of which have been shown in Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, Venice, as well as at the IDFA, Visions du Réel, Rotterdam, Cinéma du Réel or Annecy. • ŻEJTUNE

ŻEJTUNE ŻEJTUNE Alex Camilleri Producers Rebecca Anastasi (Luzzu Ltd), Ramin Bahrani (NORUZ FILMS) Lab Edition 10 , 2022 SCENE PITCH Production Country Malta SYNOPSIS A contemporary comedy-drama set in the colorful world of Maltese folk music, featuring real artists from this unheralded community. Mar Zahra is in a rut: both her marriage and career fell apart, and at age thirty, she thinks life is over. A chance encounter with the elderly troubadour, Nenu, opens her ears to the strange and beautiful tradition of għana, Maltese folk singing. The music brings new hope into her life, but forces a personal reckoning with the painful secrets buried in her family tree. DIRECTOR'S NOTE As I did in my debut, LUZZU, I will take audiences past the touristic view of Malta — in ŻEJTUNE we’ll discover charming non-actors and a totally unique musical tradition. I want to surprise viewers with complex characters, unexpected humor, and a fresh twist on genre.  ŻEJTUNE is a “neorealist musical” combined with a road movie. It’s also a deeply personal, universal story about finding hope after your world ends — a pandemic film that isn’t about the pandemic at all. I can’t wait to take you on the road to ŻEJTUNE. ABOUT THE FILMMAKER PRODUCERS Rebecca Anastasi (Luzzu Ltd), Ramin Bahrani (NORUZ FILMS) Rebecca Anastasi (Nizza Films, Malta) worked in international film production for seventeen years. She was a programmer for Valletta Film Festival, spearheading events including the conference on the Cinema of Small Nations. In 2021, she produced LUZZU, a Sundance-winner and international festival breakout, which sold in territories worldwide. She is a visiting film lecturer at the University of Malta working towards her doctorate, and an alumna of Berlinale Talents (2021). In 2022, she established her company, Nizza Films. Ramin Bahrani (Noruz Films, USA) is an Oscar-nominated writer, director and producer. His films have premiered in either the Cannes or Venice Film Festivals, where he has also served as President of the Debut Film jury. Film critic Roger Ebert named Bahrani “the director of the decade,” and his cinematic work is housed in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Bahrani’s latest film, THE WHITE TIGER, was nominated for an Oscar, BAFTA, and was viewed globally 27 million times on Netflix. He was a producer of LUZZU. Alex Camilleri (Malta) will also produce through Solari Productions. • English Animals

English Animals English Animals Claire Oakley Producers Serena Armitage, Pietro Greppi Lab Edition 9 , 2021 SCENE PITCH Production Country UK SYNOPSIS English Animals is a portrait of Mirka, a young Polish woman living in the UK in the hope of finding a home there, and of the upper-class English couple who are her employers. When Mirka moves in with Sophie and Richard (late 30s) at Fairmont Hall, she is immediately welcomed into their world and begins to feel more valued and less lonely than she has in a long time. They are nurturing and kind and Mirka excels at her job. She feels as though she has found the home she has been looking for. However, when she discovers that her burgeoning attraction to Sophie is reciprocated, she is unable to stop herself from falling into a passionate affair with her married employer that threatens everything she has built here. As the relationship progresses, Mirka is able to overcome her guilt and allow her desire for Sophie to deepen. When she then discovers that Sophie has betrayed her, Mirka is devastated and she has to consider whether she really belongs at Fairmont Hall, whether she can trust Sophie and Richard, and what the idea of home really means to her. DIRECTOR'S NOTE English Animals is about the exploitation of feelings. It looks at the outsider experience and explores themes of belonging, acceptance, respect and entitlement. It is also about a certain type of Britishness which, seen through Mirka’s eyes, is examined in a humorous and satirical way. The tone of the story will encapsulate this and luxuriate in the contradictions, hypocrisies and complications of this world. There are elements of psycho-sexual intrigue in the film and of awkward confrontations between classes. I want to explore these simmering tensions fully, capturing Mirka’s uncertainty, the watching, the waiting and the wanting. The performances will be naturalistic and unsentimental, the drama will be involving and the characters funny and deeply felt. The design will be detailed, rich and surprising. It will nod to the awkward humour in the story, leaning into Mirka’s expectations and using her point of view to discover the oddness of this world and of the couple’s traditions. The location will have something of the gothic about it, shadowy corridors and dead animals behind glass, but at other times it will feel cosy, warm and welcoming. I am interested in these shifting atmospheres and how they can deepen the audience’s experience of the story and closeness to Mirka and her journey. The camera style will be precise and still. I am interested in using composed shots through doorways, windows or foregrounded objects to create a sense of secrecy and a feeling that we are observing the drama as though it might be taking place in a doll’s house. These shots will be complimented by closer insert shots which will celebrate the objects in the house, focusing on the themes of history and tradition, as well as the details of the taxidermy. ABOUT THE FILMMAKER PRODUCERS Serena Armitage, Pietro Greppi Serena Armitage & Pietro Greppi Producers, UK Academy Award winning producer Armitage, were the producers of Benjamin Cleary’s short Stutterer (2016), while Greppi produced Departure (2016) by Andrew Steggall. The team are currently in post-production on a new feature film by Peter Strickland, Flux Gourmet, and recently produced Sarah Clift's BAFTA long-listed short, The Birth of Valerie Venus. They are jointly developing a number of features, including Clift’s feature debut, developed with the BFI, BBC Films and Creative England.
