  • Girls Will Be Girls

Girls Will Be Girls Shuchi Talati Producers Sanjay Gulati, Richa Chadda Lab Edition 9 , 2021 SCENE PITCH Production Country India SYNOPSIS Follows the journey of 16 year old Mira, whose sexy, rebellious coming of age is disrupted by her young mother who never got to come of age herself. DIRECTOR'S NOTE Director’s Note GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS is set in a conservative Hindu school much like my school where we started each day with a pledge to “preserve our ageless Indian culture and conform to the way of life prescribed by it.” As I sprouted breasts, I understood that ‘Indian culture’ was the reason my skirt had to be long and my behavior demure. We were being taught to be ashamed of our bodies and sexuality while male sexuality was allowed to express itself, often in aggression towards us. Meanwhile, real female bodies and female desire were also erased from our screens. Breasts and butts were hypersexualized as women gyrated for the male gaze. But vaginas, menstruation, pubic hair, etc. were absent or treated with embarrassment and revulsion. The effect of this erasure is to cast our bodies as something shameful. It teaches us to be compliant and afraid of our body, sexuality and voice. Despite this, all around me I saw fierce, funny women who subverted social and moral codes. In GIRLS I wanted to write about these women who populated my life but not my screens. In GIRLS, Mira and her mother Anila are sexual, embodied beings with secretions and desires. Mira examines her vagina in a mirror, masturbates by rubbing up against a teddy bear and orchestrates her first sexual encounter. Anila shuns the self-sacrificing, asexual roles mothers are relegated to. She envies her daughter’s figure and boyfriend and pursues her desires with fervor. But even though GIRLS is a close observation of gender roles, sexuality, and patriarchy, it makes no thesis statement. The women in this film are not essentialized by their identities as Indian women, nor are they stand-ins for entire communities whose stories enlighten us about a social issue. I want Mira and Anila to represent only their singular selves as they experience love, disillusionment and envy. Because this is how their stories will also be universal—a luxury mostly reserved for characters from dominant cultures. Pause Omer Sterenberg Producers Ayelet Kait, Amir Harel Lab Edition 12 , 2024 SCENE PITCH Production Lama Films Country Israel SYNOPSIS Itay and Alon, born and raised in the Golan Heights, have been best friends for as long as they can remember. Alon is already a year into his military service, and Itay is about to enlist and join the same unit. They go on a road trip to Eilat, to celebrate Itay's upcoming draft. Their plans take an unpredictable turn when they pick up Osher, a transgender in her late 20s who’s running away from her abusive husband. Itay falls for Osher and decides to help her despite Alon's suspicions and growing jealousy. The three find shelter in an isolated desert commune, and it seems like life can finally pause. But violence and war soon find a way in, confronting them with secrets and feelings they’ve been hiding from each other, forcing Itay to confront his identity and fears. DIRECTOR'S NOTE As war and violence rage, the expectation for sacrifice increases. As if a violent death is a pre-written destiny, young men throw themselves into the fire with a burning faith that this is the only way they can protect their loved ones. When does one stop being a child and become a soldier? Are life and death, love and war, really opposite, or two sides of the same coin? And in the midst of history unfolding with massive force, what is the meaning of innocence and compassion? • Adi Adwan

The Bride Screenwriter: Adi Adwan Producer: Itai Tamir , Laila Films Language: Arabic, Hebrew Format: 8 Episodes x 48 Minutes Send PITCHDECK LOGLINE In a Druze village where reincarnation shapes fate, investigator Jimmy Falah must solve his mentor's murder and find the mentor's missing 8-year-old granddaughter, uncovering past debts that could end the cycle of rebirth and revenge. SYNOPSIS In a Druze village in northern Israel, investigator Jamal "Jimmy" Falah faces his toughest case when his mentor is murdered and the mentors' granddaughter, Nano, goes missing. Jimmy uncovers family secrets, a violent history, and the belief that Nano is the reincarnation of a murdered bride. As he pieces together the truth, Jimmy confronts the vengeful brother behind the crimes. In a tense showdown, Jimmy chooses forgiveness over revenge, saving Nano and breaking the cycle of reincarnation and vengeance. WRITER'S STATEMENT The series delves into the mysterious Druze community, blending mysticism, tension, and intrigue. As a Druze, I bring authenticity, revealing complexities only an insider can. While reincarnation is central, the series also explores the secretive nature of Druze life—its divisions, gossip, and generational conflicts. The eight episodes, inspired by my experiences, use voice-over monologues to explore each character's past, gradually uncovering their motivations and ties to the narrative, while offering viewers a rare glimpse into a world rarely portrayed on screen. ABOUT THE WRITER A Druze screenwriter, director, and producer known for his work in film and television. His feature film ARABANI is recognized as the first Druze-Israeli film Jerusalem Film Festival award-winner. His 2023 documentary THE THIRD MAN, commissioned by Makan 33 - Israeli Broadcasting Corporation, premiered at the Haifa International Film Festival. Adwan is currently developing a feature film supported by the Israel Film Fund. He also appeared as an actor in the fourth season of FAUDA. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT Adi Adwan, whom I’ve known for nearly 20 years, conceived the idea for the series. We began developing it during our travels up north, searching for locations and further honed it during the workshop. From the beginning, I was drawn to the mystical and religious concepts unfolding within a closed society. The uniqueness of using reincarnation to solve various cases is magical. It's a significant challenge, but Adi's advantage, coming from the Druze community and knowledgeable about its secrets, is immense. We still have a way to go, but the foundations are solid and available starting today. PRODUCER PROFILE Established in 2010 Laila Films is a boutique production company focused on emerging Israeli and international voices, Tamir's filmography, spanning close to fifty feature films, includes Nadav Lapid's Locarno Film Festival award-winner POLICEMAN, Keren Yedaya's Cannes Film Festival Caméra d'Or winner OR, Israel's 2019 Oscar-entry The CAKEMAKER, Dani Rosenberg’s film, OF DOGS AND MEN, Venice 2024, and films by Tsivia Barkai Yaacov, Anat Maltz, Raphael Najadri, and many others. Add a Title Add a Title Send Send Meny Aviram Producers: , Aleeza Chanowitz Big Crater Lab Edition 3 2024 PITCH LOGLINE Anxious about the future of the world, very pregnant Devorah (35) attends a wilderness survival course. But before she learns how to survive mother nature, she’ll first have to survive her own mother. SYNOPSIS Pregnant Devorah (35) is distressed about losing herself and ending up like her needy mother after birth. Instead of “falling down the stairs”, she signs up for a two-month wilderness survival course on an ecological farm in the Israeli desert. Just as she eases into communal life, Devorah’s mother Deedee (60) joins the course, ruining her plans. When Devorah goes into labor before the course is over, she accepts that to live is to take a risk, and that ending up like her mother isn’t so bad. WRITER'S STATEMENT When ISIS was a thing, I Marie Kondo-ed my belongings and joined an ecological farm. Over the years I have exchanged some anxieties for others, though some have steadfastly remained: Holocaust II and climate change. Despite that, I had a child; I'm optimistic- the world can become a better place. But the experience of childbirth brought on the new fear of turning into my parents. And this, in a way, is the most challenging fear; no composting or forged papers will save me. This series is based on my experiences from the farm and my impossible yearning to change my destiny and be my own person. PRODUCER'S STATEMENT Aleeza is one of the most talented and promising screenwriters and directors in Israel. Our mutual success with her first series, "Chanshi", which was the first Israeli series shown at Sundance festival, encouraged us to try harder. I believe that "Big Crater" has a huge potential and is Aleeza's big next step: making a name for herself in her native America.
